Klondike
MLA for Klondike, Minister of Finance, Minister Responsible for the Public Service Commission, the Yukon Liquor Corporation, & Yukon Lottery Commission
Sandy Silver was first elected as a Member of the Yukon Legislative Assembly in 2011 representing the riding of Klondike. In 2012, Sandy became the interim leader and was chosen as the permanent leader of the Yukon Liberal Party in 2014.
In 2016, Sandy led the Yukon Liberals to a majority government and was elected Premier of the Yukon. He served as the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Executive Council Office. In 2021, he was re-elected as the Premier of the Yukon and continued to serve in his Ministerial roles. In September 2022, Sandy announced that he would not seek a 4th term as MLA for Klondike in the next territorial election and that he had instructed the Yukon Liberal Party to initiate a leadership convention to determine the next leader of the Party. He continues to serve as the MLA for Klondike for the duration of his term, and on January 14, 2023, he was sworn in by Premier Ranj Pillai as the Minister of Finance, Minister responsible for the Public Service Commission, Minister responsible for the Yukon Liquor Corporation, and Minister responsible for the Yukon Lottery Commission.
Sandy was previously a mathematics teacher at Robert Service School in his hometown of Dawson City and was an active educator in the First Nation community. He was responsible for supervising practicums for the Yukon Native Teacher Education Program and worked with the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Justice department and the restorative justice process including Community Group Conferencing. He has worked with youth alongside the Young Offenders Act and mentored a number of at-risk teens.
Sandy has a Bachelor of Math and Psychology from Saint Francis Xavier University and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Maine.
