Ranj Pillai

Porter Creek South

Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, Minister of Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Yukon Development Corporation and the Yukon Energy Corporation. MLA for Porter Creek South. 

Ranj Pillai is a long time Yukoner with a background working with NGOs, government, private sector entities, and as the owner of multiple businesses.

Pillai previously sat as a Whitehorse City Councillor. During his tenure, Ranj was active in protecting McIntyre Creek from development. He was also instrumental in bringing Hockey Day in Canada to the city in 2011. As a City Councillor, he fought hard to represent constituency needs and would bring this experience to the Yukon Legislative Assembly. He also spearheaded the first anti-racism and discrimination bylaw North of 60.

Ranj is a trusted decision-maker and tireless community advocate who has contributed to the success of Yukon businesses, governments, schools and not-for-profits. He has coached sports at Porter Creek Secondary over the last 15 years, negotiated resource deals with First Nations, and helped build many small businesses in Yukon.

Ranj previously worked as the Executive Director for the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations Government located in the largest protected area in the world. He has also held previous roles as Senior VP Operations and Business Development with Northern Vision Development, Advisor with the Office of the President at Yukon College, Director for the Ta’an Kwach’an Development Corporation, and Director with Gorilla Minerals Corporation.

Ranj and his wife, Delilah, have two sons.

Ranj Pillai was first elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the general election for the 34th Legislative Assembly on November 7, 2016.

Ranj was appointed to the Executive Council of Yukon (cabinet) on December 3, 2016. He is currently Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources, Minister of Economic Development, and Minister responsible for the Yukon Development Corporation and the Yukon Energy Corporation.
