Jeanie Dendys

Mountainview

Minister of Tourism and Culture, Minister responsible for the Women’s Directorate and Minister responsible for the Yukon Workers Compensation Health and Safety Board.

Jeanie Dendys, Yukon innovator and community leader, is the MLA for the Mountainview riding. Dendys previously worked as Director of Justice for Kwanlin Dün First Nation in the riding for the past seven years. She has strong skills in developing partnerships, negotiating agreements to support collaboration and implementing action. Her practical approach is valued by partners and her ability to maintain engagement, including working through conflict to align interests, has been highly successful. She has a long history of participation on public advisory and working groups.

Jeanie provided significant guidance in the Yukon Policing Review, which resulted in the report Sharing Common Ground a Review of the Yukon Police Force. She participated in the review of Yukon Corrections as a Yukon First Nation Advisor. Currently, Jeanie has served, since 2012, as the Yukon representative to the RCMP Commissioner’s First Nation Policing Advisory Board. She also serves as a KDFN representative on the newly formed Yukon Public Safety Committee and Mental Wellness Strategy – First Nation Partnership committee.

Dendys is born and raised in Yukon and of Tahltan First Nation and Norwegian ancestry. Jeanie has one son in his teens completing high school and one in his twenties building his independent life. She brings a woman’s perspective and commitment to improving quality of life for children, youth and families. Jeanie is committed to learning and passing on traditional values and cultural skills to her sons. She shares an interest in culture with her family and has followed her passion in learning more about using plants from the land for ceremony and healing.

Jeanie has an active volunteer life having served as the President of the Yukon Indian Hockey Association for several years. She has also served on the Tahltan Health and Social Services Authority as the Vice-Chair from 2013-15. Jeanie has volunteered locally and with her home nation in organizing cultural events and ceremonies, which she believes are fundamental to healthy First Nation community life.

Jeanie Dendys brings a wealth of experience working for First Nation and public government in B.C and Yukon.  With a background in criminology, business and most recently First Nation Governance and a focus on youth as the reason to make the community healthier, safer and more vibrant, Jeanie is committed to serving the constituency of Mountainview.

Jeanie Dendys was first elected to the Yukon Legislative Assembly in the general election for the 34th Legislative Assembly on November 7, 2016.

Jeanie Dendys was appointed to the Executive Council of Yukon (cabinet) on December 3, 2016. She is currently Minister of Tourism and Culture, Minister responsible for Women’s Directorate and Minister Responsible for Yukon Workers Compensation Health and Safety Board.

Jeanie Dendys is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Appointments to Major Government Boards and Committees, and was appointed to the committee by order of the House on January 12, 2017.
