As our Yukon Liberal caucus approaches its one-year anniversary serving Yukoners, I have reflected on what we have accomplished, together.
I am grateful to the people of Whitehorse West for the faith they have placed in me.
This riding is a microcosm of the territory. The issues of Whitehorse West are the issues of the territory, issues my colleagues and I are working to address.
At public meetings, at public events, at our barbecue and on the doorstep the people of Whitehorse West have been gracious and open with their thoughts and ideas. I thank them for that. I want them to know their voice is being heard and is reflected in their government.
Our Liberal caucus works as a team. I count myself lucky to have landed among a talented, thoughtful, decent group of people committed to public service.
As Minister of Highways and Public Works, I am proud of the improvements we are making through investments in infrastructure in Yukon communities.
I am also proud of work that is being done to pave the road between Ross River and Faro, as well as work being done on the Campbell Highway.
Much work has also been done to improve management of our airports, and I thank the aviation industry for its continued feedback.
As Minister of the Public Service Commission, I am committed to seeing the public service deepen its diversity and inclusiveness. An engaged civil service is essential to ensuring the passion, ideas and thoughts of Yukoners are used to innovate and to serve our citizens better.
I am proud to be working every day to make Yukoners’ lives better, and I look forward to the years to come. Together, we can move mountains.
2017 Highlights
- Amending the Vital Statistics Act and Human Rights Act to correct some of the heart-wrenching and needless bureaucratic and social challenges faced by our society’s LGBTQ2S community.
- Creation of National Aboriginal Day as a statutory holiday in Yukon.
- Creating more community mental health worker positions.
- Began the engineering work on the road between Ross River and Faro, with paving work set to begin as early as 2019.
- Working government-to-government with the Carcross-Tagish First Nation to address replacing the Nares Bridge, ensuring local benefits.
- Drafting the Public Airports Act to provide management structure for Yukon’s airports and for industry, something lacking for almost 22 years.
- Improvements to the Carcross cutoff intersection to make it safer and more efficient.
- Requiring day homes and day cares to test for radon and to do mitigation if needed.
- Ensuring the fair wage schedule is part of government procurement documents.
- Adding recognition of local benefits within government tenders.
- Working to ensure local benefits flow to Yukon communities from government tenders.
- Improving relations with First Nation governments.
- Fulfilling a commitment to hold the Yukon Forum four times a year.
