The Yukon Liberal Caucus welcomes the news from the Yukon Bureau of Statistics that April 2023 marked another strong month of building permit growth across the Yukon.
Seasonally adjusted data released by Statistics Canada for April 2023 shows that the current dollar value of building permits in the Yukon increased by 129.7%, compared to April 2022. Across Canada, the total value of permits decreased by -19.6% over the same time period.1
“This is another strong period of growth for Yukon contractors, tradespeople and the construction industry as a whole,” said Minister of Highways and Public Works and MLA for Riverdale North.
Additionally, the value of non-residential building permits in the Yukon increased by a whopping 378.3%, compared to a drop of -14.2% in value seen across Canada.
“The Yukon Liberal Government is working hard to ensure the economic conditions are right for private sector employers in the Yukon to succeed,” added Premier Ranj Pillai. “Another strong month of building permit growth in the Yukon shows that this hard work is paying off,” concluded Pillai.
As an economic indicator, the value of building permits estimates the future performance of the construction industry and the economy in general, since issuing a building permit is one of the first steps in the construction process.
The Yukon Liberal Government passed a budget in 2023-24 with significant investments in housing and the infrastructure that Yukon residents and businesses rely on to thrive. While Currie Dixon and the Yukon Party voted against these measures, it’s not too late for the opposition caucus to reverse course and publicly support investment in the housing and infrastructure projects that drive strong economic growth across the territory, especially for contractors and tradespeople.
