Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:
This June, we recognize, honour and celebrate National Indigenous History Month. For our Caucus, Yukoners and all Canadians it’s a time to reflect on the rich history, heritage, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.
Since time immemorial, Yukon First Nations have shaped the lands on which we live, and their diverse cultures and traditions continue to enrich our society.
Despite the impacts of colonization, Yukon First Nations have worked hard to revitalize their languages and cultural practices. We commend the dedication of First Nation governments, language organizations, community members, and Elders in these efforts.
During this month, I encourage all Yukoners to take the time to learn about Indigenous experiences and the role we can all play in Reconciliation. This includes acknowledging the challenges Indigenous peoples face and celebrating their resilience and contributions.
Some steps Yukoners can take during this month are: listening to Indigenous voices, exploring Indigenous art and storytelling, participating in events like National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21 and the Adäka Cultural Festival, and visiting the Yukon Native Language Centre to learn more about Indigenous languages. I know our Caucus will be deepening our learning and partaking in celebrations.
Thank you for joining us as we uphold this important month and honour all Yukon First Nations.
Happy National Indigenous History Month!
