Yesterday, in a moving ceremony, Yukon became the first jurisdiction in Canada to unveil it’s MMIWG2S+ Strategy. It is not just a Yukon Government strategy – it is a strategy for all of Yukon that was created by many partners.
It is called “Changing the Story to Upholding Dignity and Justice: Yukon’s MMIWG2S+ Strategy”.
According to Minister Jeanie McLean:
“Today is a historic day. I am so proud of this strategy and of the work that got it to this day. This is a starting place, and we still have much work to do, but the family members, advocates, leaders and members of the Yukon Advisory Committee should take a moment to reflect on this incredible accomplishment.”
This strategy marks a major milestone for family members, survivors and advocates who have been waiting too long for action. It represents our commitment, made in a sacred way, to these women and families.
“Changing the Story to Upholding Dignity and Justice” will guide us for the next 10-15 years towards our vision of violence free communities where indigenous women, girls and LGTBQ2S+ people are safe and respected.
All Yukoners can join in and be part of this strategy. We encourage everyone to read the document and consider how they can be a part of the solution.
