Dear constituents,
Since our last newsletter, your Liberal caucus has created a new statutory holiday – National Aboriginal Day – and changed the Human Rights and Vital Statistics acts to strengthen the rights of the Yukon’s LGBTQ2S community. I’m very pleased to have been a part of these progressive initiatives that have brought the Yukon in line with norms across the country.
Your Liberal caucus also passed a budget that added more than $4 million for frontline teaching staff, added 11 more mental health workers to service eight rural communities and will build four seniors’ housing units in Carmacks and six staff housing units in Ross River, because all Yukon communities matter.
As your MLA, I have been talking with nurses, contractors, mining companies, pilots and airline companies, teachers, union members, artists, archaeologists, placer miners, tourism operators and municipal politicians to learn about their issues and how we can better serve their interests. These conversations have been candid and useful, much like the conversations we had on the doorstop last year. This summer, I look forward to resuming our talks and hearing your thoughts on the territory’s new direction.
I have also started preliminary conversations with city officials to find a solution to the Ingram entrance/exit issue. Those talks will continue through the summer and into the fall.
My congratulations to all the grads in the neighbourhood who worked so hard to make it through school. I hope you enjoy your summer and wish you well in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Richard Mostyn
MLA for Whitehorse West
