MLA Pauline Frost announcing $50,000 to Vuntut Gwich’in First Nation to support the protection of the Porcupine Caribou during Caribou Days
Drin’ Gwinzii Chill’ak Naii,
I hope this letter finds you strong and well, and enjoying a beautiful Yukon summer.
The Liberal Caucus has completed our first spring sitting in the Legislative Assembly, including the introduction of a new budget, which contains many positive changes for Yukoners. During my time in the house, I brought forward a number of issues, such as the need for a more collaborative care model for our rural communities and the need for a better system that allows our Yukon Elders to age in their own communities.
The Liberal Caucus received unanimous consent on the new bill to make National Aboriginal Day a statutory holiday in Yukon. I was so pleased to be back home with you drinking tea together to celebrate Aboriginal day. You helped strengthen my spirit and resolve to keep working hard, especially on behalf of the people of Old Crow.
Law-making is challenging; but I am pleased to have tabled ground-breaking bills that protect the diversity of genders and the different relationships people can have in our modern society. I’m proud that gender-fluid citizens now have the same rights and protections under these laws as the rest of their fellow Yukoners.
I am grateful to you, the people of Old Crow and the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation, for providing important insights to climate change in the north. By speaking of the changes you see on the land, and making recommendations about what might help us adjust to the changes brought on by our warming climate, you guide our thinking and work toward a more positive future.
I am proud to work hard to improve the health, safety and well-being of the people of Vuntut Gwitchin. I look forward to spending time in Old Crow this summer to connect with community members on the issues that matter to them, including infrastructure, childcare, the sewage lagoon, the multi-use centre, solar energy projects and the protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. I will continue to educate and advocate as we move forward, today, and every day, to honour our lands, our water and our animals.
Mahsi Cho for your continued support,
Pauline Frost
MLA for Vuntut Gwitchin
