Hello beautiful Mount Lorne – Southern Lakes!
I hope this message finds you enjoying our beautiful Yukon Summer with family and friends. I have been busy these last few months meeting with all of the communities around the Southern Lakes. The Local Advisory Council forum was held in Marsh Lake this year, and I was happy to present information on infrastructure spending and funding. I also invited representatives from Bell Canada to come speak about cell coverage issues, an important topic for our communities.
It was such a pleasure to support the Southern Lakes GranFondo’s 10th annual race on June 3rd! A shout out to Simi Morrison and all of the volunteers who make this race possible. This year, the race was hosted by Tagish who once again made fancy treats and presented the highly coveted “crooked wheel” prize to the last place finishers.
The spring session of the Legislative Assembly was productive and successful for our caucus. During the spring session, our Liberal caucus was very excited to introduce and pass our first piece of legislation. Yukon now has a new statutory holiday, National Aboriginal Day, which will be celebrated every year on June 21st. Thank you to Kevin Barr, our past MLA, for championing National Aboriginal Day during his term. This year the holiday coincided with the opening of the stunning new Carcross Learning Centre, and it was a pleasure to attend the opening ceremonies.
A reminder: fire season is upon us, so please be safe – we don’t want to have any human started fires in any of our communities. We are lucky to have so many amazing volunteer firefighters in Southern Lakes. This year I was pleased to be at the Community Safety Awards when our own Diane Lister was presented with the 1st Responder award. Congratulations to Diane and all the 1st Responders who work so hard to keep us safe.
I look forward to seeing you at local events and/or community meetings this summer!
