Today in the legislative assembly our Liberal Caucus was proud to table Bill 5, an act to amend the Vital Statistics Act and Human Rights Act.
These amendments mark the delivery of a campaign promise to protect transgender and other gender-diverse Yukoners from discrimination. The act also removes the existing, archaic requirement for sex reassignment surgery before a person can change the gender on their birth registration.
In addition to keeping pace with the rest of the country, these changes have been a long-overdue for LGBTQ2 Yukoners who have the right to live free from discrimination because of gender identity or gender expression. Our Liberal Caucus is committed to healthy, happy communities through improving the long-term well-being and quality of life for all in our territory. This is integral to our success as a government.
We were honoured to stand up for Yukoners today to ensure territorial government laws, policies and practices treat everyone equally.
