Today in the legislative assembly our caucus was proud to table Bill 2, the National Aboriginal Day Act. This legislation proposes to create National Aboriginal Day as an annual statutory holiday in Yukon beginning on June 21, 2017.
Throughout our campaign this past fall, we heard from our constituents that the way forward is together. Our Liberal Caucus is committed to the value and importance of renewed government-to-government relations with Yukon First Nations.
National Aboriginal Day honours the enormous contributions First Nations have made and continue to make in Yukon, based on centuries of history in the territory. Celebrating First Nations culture together as a community is an important and significant step towards reconciliation.
Following our promise to make evidence-based decisions, the Liberal Caucus is further encouraged by the results of the National Aboriginal Day survey conducted last summer where 88 per cent of Yukon respondents were in favour of the bill.
This new holiday will provide Yukoners and visitors alike an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the contribution of Indigenous peoples to the fabric of Canada.
